Well well well, look who's back in town! A lot has changed old friend, but I dearly hope you have not.

Top Comment: I just sent this picture on our family WhatsApp group as we all used to like them. Below is my mum's reply; copied and pasted. I remember thinking your dad had been with another woman in the van until I found an empty packet of those in the glove compartment! šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£xxx

Best parking lots in town

Main Post:

I constantly find myself criticizing parking lots in town as ā€œthe worst parking lot.ā€ I almost went to say it about one I was in a day ago and stopped myself because I’ve never taken a moment to appreciate a good one in town.

Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of bad ones, I’m just looking on a positive spin on a classic grumble of mine.

So where in town do you believe to have the best parking lot and why?

Top Comment: Apparently one of the best parking lots is at my neighbors house. None of the over 14 cars in the front yard run but he keeps adding even after getting fined over many yrs. Sorry for the side rant. Suggest Riverpark square.

Top Comment: Broke ass teenagers and broker ass college students. I went to school at a small hillbilly hs (graduated this year) and not even kidding there was probably at least 30 panther platform cars in that parking lot, out of maybe 150 cars. Cut to going to college now and the college parking lot is just as filled if not more filled with these fuckers. They’re like lice, everybody gets it, hell I even tried to buy one for a first car (Mercury Murauder, it was like $3500 in 2022 I should have just did it)

Just finished Salem's Lot, a creepy, fascinating tale of a small town invaded by vampires.

Main Post:

As gripping and mysterious as the prologue was, I wasn't sure about the book for the first couple of chapters. But looking back, despite its languid pace, it think some amazing character development and setup in first half make the second half of the novel, which I read in two sittings, so much better.

I love how the vampires prey and feed on the dissatisfaction and secrets of withering small town. I love the brief interludes where King goes through the mundane day to day life of the denizens of Jerusalem's Lot. I got attached to some of minor characters like Weasel Craig and Eva Miller. King makes a point that the town was devolving and falling apart anyway, but the vampires just sped up the process. My favorite side arc was that of the philandering Bonnie.

Am I the only one who wanted to know more about the Hubie Marston story? The kid, Mark, was a fantastic bad ass character, and I can't end this post without mentioning the amazing Father Callahan and how tragic his arc is.

I heard we will see him again in the Dark Tower series, but no spoilers for that because I haven't read any Dark Tower books.

Next King book to read is my first attempt at his short stories, Night Shift.

Top Comment:

If you’re reading Night Shift next, both ā€˜Jerusalem’s Lot’ and ā€˜One for the Road’ are tied into Salem’s Lot. Both are great short stories.

Small-town America in Cinema: looking for suggestions

Main Post:

As the title says, I'm looking for movies that capture the feel of small-town America, rural life, or the American periphery. I love films that showcase the unique charm, struggles, and hidden depths of these areas—whether they're heartwarming, quirky, or even a bit dark. I’d especially appreciate recommendations from independent filmmakers, as they often bring a raw, authentic perspective to these stories.

Some examples I’ve enjoyed include Fargo, Nebraska, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Paris, Texas, No Country for Old Men, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Straight Story, and The Power of the Dog.

As you can see, I’ve included a few Westerns, but ones that don’t strictly follow the typical Western genre conventions. Instead, these films use the Western atmosphere to explore human loneliness and psychology. So genre isn’t a big focus for me—I’m more interested in the setting. However, movies that specifically touch on forgotten or overlooked parts of America are especially welcome.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Thanks people for your amazing responses, yesterday I watched Songs My Brothers Taught Me and I really appreciated it, my Excel-movies file is exploding with new information!

Top Comment: Last Picture Show is a masterpiece. They changed nothing to make the sets. It's a time capsule of rural Texas. The Whole Shooting Match is a more obscure small Texas town film. West of Austin there is a hill country community of rich hippies and Jews. The film shows some local rascals try and start their own businesses to take advantage. Tiny budget. Independent filmmaker that has a wild history of his own. I'd recommend the Les Blank documentaries. Pather Panchali if you're down for some foreign.
